Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ufak tefek sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine destelanmasıyla oluşan kısa polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit sözıntısı ile ötekisi arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok nüshada polipeptit alt birimi çitndırır). üs nüans peptitlerin kısa, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, gayrı amino asite sabah akşam, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle destelanır. Polipeptid örgüsına tıkızlan amino asitlerin her biri örgüya peptid destelarıyla destelanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Aşina en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine tıkızlan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, özgür amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin gayrı ucundaki özgür α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
